I warned my husband at least thirty times. He did not listen and I lost a whole day of work because of it. He knew that the music sharing software we had on our PC was not safe, but he thought he might get lucky.
He’s in a band, and from time to time he downloads a song just long enough to master it, then he deletes it. I know that a lot of the files you get from such a program are typically either full of viruses or Adware.
He thought that he was safe, but I knew better. Sure enough, a week ago, he downloaded a wonderful virus that brought my day to a grinding halt.
The music sharing software itself is safe, but when you download something from someone else’s laptop or computer, you’re opening yourself up to receive just about anything. You aren’t receiving just the song in most circumstances, because a lot of the songs have nasty little surprises in them.
We got a pretty nasty virus that began planting programs around my computer, and it also stopped my antivirus program from working. I knew it had to have come from the music sharing program, even though my husband swore he wasn’t using it any longer.
I had a headache, and I slept for a number of hours. During this time he reloaded the music sharing program, got several songs, and then uninstalled it, hoping I wouldn’t find out.
As I got on the computer I noticed that my user account said that new software program had been installed, but I couldn’t find anything. I looked in our trash can on the computer and saw the music sharing software sitting there. He wasn’t covering his tracks well.
I had to get a new antivirus program to clean my computer, and when the list of viruses came up, all but one of them had been known to be passed along via a music sharing program. He did not even argue with me when I got angry with him, and he said that would be the last time he tried it.
I guess many people need to get the bad virus before they get wise about a music sharing program. When you download from them, you are giving somebody free access to your computer. That’s never a wise selection. We got off lucky with just a couple of viruses actually, because it could have been a whole lot worse.
I recently found a free listening music site that has a huge rock band music list with the best rock and music artists. With any luck, my husband can use this instead of downloading viruses.
